Addiction recovery tips can help those who are struggling to escape from substance abuse.

Attempting to leave substance abuse behind can be a daunting prospect and many addicts will suffer a lot before they become willing to get help. When they have reached a point where they have had enough then it is possible for these people to completely turn their lives around.

Addiction Recovery Tips

Those individuals who are aiming to achieve substance abuse recovery may only have one opportunity to get it right. There are no guarantees that the willingness to change will ever be there again in the future. Many of those who relapse die within a short period. Addiction recovery tips can be used to improve a person’s chances of staying clean and sober.

  1. Those in recovery should avoid holding onto the view that relapse is a “normal” part of recovery. Many people do relapse, but this is something that should be avoided at all costs. Many of those who do drink or use will never get another chance at recovery.
  2. Those who have just managed to escape substance abuse should avoid comparing themselves too much to other people in recovery. Addicts come in all shapes and sizes and all will have made different journeys into recovery. It is not necessary to hit any special rock bottom before individuals can recover from substance abuse and live a fulfilling life.
  3. It is important for those in recovery to feel grateful about their escape from addiction. Grateful people will be less willing to surrender their sobriety.
  4. It is important that those new to recovery don’t try and fix everything in their lives straight away. Nobody is perfect and just giving up an addiction is a great step towards becoming a functioning human. Addicts have the rest of their lives for self development and this process should occur naturally just by remaining sober and learning from the lesson that life sends their way.
  5. Those in recovery should make some efforts to improve their physical health because this can greatly affect their ability to enjoy life. It is important not to get too carried away, but a regular fitness routine can bring great benefits. A medical consultation should always proceed becoming involved with any fitness program.
  6. It is important that those in recovery have realistic expectations. Managing to escape substance abuse is a fantastic achievement, but there will still be bad days in the future. Nobody gets through life without the occasional bump, but it is possible to learn how to deal more effectively with these bumps.
  7. Joining a fellowship such as a 12-step program is something to think about. Groups like AA have worked well for people in the past and there is no doubting the benefits of the support they can offer. These groups are not for everyone, but they should never be just dismissed without at least first considering them.
  8. It is important to treat recovery as something to be enjoyed and not as something to be endured – attitude is everything. It can take a while for people to feel completely comfortable in recovery, but once they do life can be extremely satisfying; it is a time for trying new things and discovering unknown talents.
  9. Doing voluntary work is recommended for those new to recovery because it can ease self-absorption and allow them to meet new people. Those who are unemployed could find that voluntary work leads into a full-time job.
  10. Learning relaxation techniques like yoga, meditation, or tai chi can be really useful because it provides those in recovery a new way of releasing stress – one that doesn’t involve alcohol or drugs.

The above addiction recovery tips are just the tip of the iceberg. Those new to recovery will find things that work for them; if any tip makes drinking or using drugs less likely it is usually a good one.
